The role of the Local Monitoring Council (LMC)
Our governors on the Local Monitoring Councils play a vital role in supporting their school and the Trust Board. They help each school aspire to — and achieve — the highest standards of education, care, and wellbeing.
Each Local Monitoring Council brings together representatives from across the school community. Membership typically includes:
- Foundation Governors (for Church of England schools) or Community Governors
- Parent Governors
- Staff Governors
- The Headteacher and/or Head of School
Together, the LMC provides local insight, constructive challenge, and strategic support, ensuring that every school continues to flourish.

Interested in Becoming a Governor?
Becoming a governor is a meaningful way to volunteer and can be hugely rewarding. Governors help ensure that children thrive academically, socially, culturally and spiritually, all within a safe and nurturing environment. It’s also a great opportunity to develop new skills and work with others to make a real difference.
You don’t need specific qualifications or experience. What matters most is a commitment to children’s welfare and achievement, a desire to contribute positively to school life, common sense, and the time to dedicate to the role. While many aspects of governance are statutory, governors provide strategic thinking, support and challenge.
What the role involves
- Attending Local Monitoring Committee (LMC) meetings regularly (six per year, usually early evening and up to two hours)
- Playing an active role in monitoring and decision-making
- Taking time to learn about the school
- Being approachable to staff and parents while staying clear about your role
- Representing the school positively at all times
- Working as part of a team — governors never act alone
- Supporting the collective decisions of the LMC and Trust Board
- Contributing openly in meetings and upholding the final outcomes
- Maintaining confidentiality at all times
School governorship is also a valuable addition to any CV and can open up future career opportunities.
We welcome governors from all backgrounds, bringing a wide range of skills and experiences to our schools across Kent.
